Alghero (Fertilia) Airport is the closest to our holiday home in Bosa. It is now a medium-sized airport with a choice of cafes and lots of car hire desks.
If you have hired a car, you may have to queue at peak times, but at other times you should be able to pick it up very quickly.
On leaving the airport, you need to follow signs into Alghero, which is about 3km away.
There are two main other airports that serve Sardinia: Olbia (Costa Smeralda) airport on the east coast and Cagliari (Elmas) airport in the south.
Bosa by Car
Leave the airport and follow signs to Alghero. Drive through Alghero along the waterfront and up past the medieval walls where you should start to see signs for Bosa.
The coastal road is via the SP49 (1hr 10 mins) and we would recommend taking this route to Bosa. There are many coves and small beaches on this route and breathtaking views of the sea.
Alternatively, you can take the inland route via Villanova Monteleone (SP292) (1hr 30mins) which is just as winding but offers beautiful views back to Alghero and of the mountains around Bosa.
Bosa by Bus
If you are taking the bus either to Bosa or into Alghero, you need to buy a ticket from the bus ticket machine located near the departure gate or the airport newsagent shop.
To find the bus, turn right on leaving the main exit and walk for about 100 metres. All buses have their destination on the front. Drivers rarely speak English so ask at the Tourist Information Office if you are unsure which bus to take.
The bus route is currently operated by Arst. Please check times with the Tourist Information Office at the airport.
There is a very regular and reliable train service from Cagliari airport to Macomer, from where you can get a bus to Bosa. Driving from Olbia or Cagliari is mostly on the motorway: Olbia Airport to Bosa (about 1hr 50mins) and from Cagliari Airport to Bosa (2-3hrs).
Bosa is a medieval town built around a castle. The newer parts of town have been built around the older part, which is protected to keep it as close as possible to its original style.
Corso Vittorio Emanuelle is the main street of the town and contains most of the shops and quite a few bars and restaurants along it.
You will find our home at the busier end of the Corso, near the pretty square with an old fountain called Piazza Constituzione. The address is ViaVai!, no. 72, Corso Vittorio Emanuele II (Sat nav: 40.295792, 8.501659)
Bosa is a small town, if you get lost you’ll pretty easily find yourself back where you started. It has a lot of one-way streets so you need to keep following the signs to the Centro. If you arrive in the evening, parking may be tricky so grab a space where you can.
Blue lines indicate paid parking, even if they are very faint! Locals may be parked under a sign saying ‘No Parking’ but they seem to know what they can get away with – you’ll get a ticket. See our FAQs for more info
